WTA Indian Wells 2018: Câteva date despre turneul care începe astăzi.

Astăzi încep partidele de pe tabloul principal al primului turneu WTA Premier Mandatory al anului, “BNP Paribas Open” de la Indian Wells, California.

Celelalte turnee de această categorie sunt “Miami Open presented by Itau” (21-30 martie), “Mutua Madrid Open” (5-12 mai) şi “China Open” (29 septembrie – 7 octombrie).
Indian Wells şi Miami formează seria numită “Sunshine Double” şi spre deosebire de turneele de la Madrid şi Beijing se întind pe durata a doua săptămâni.

Turneul se dispută la Indian Wells Tennis Garden, care include a doua cea mai mare arenă dedicată tenisului (în aer liber) – Stadium 1 – 16.100 de locuri – după Arthur Ashe Stadium de la Flushing Meadows (23.200), New York şi a treia în total, după O2 Arena de la Londra (17.500 de locuri).
Stadium 2 are o capacitate de 8.000 de locuri şi alte 10 terenuri sunt destinate jocurilor oficiale (6 pentru antrenament).
Suprafaţa pe care se joacă este hard (plexipave).

Ediţia 2018 este una jubiliară – a 30-a.
Jucătoarele românce au disputat două finale: Simona Halep a câştigat titlul în 2015 şi Irina Spîrlea a fost finalistă în 1997 (finalele de simplu şi dublu la sfârşitul ştirii).

Deţinătoarele titlurilor sunt Elena Vesnina (Rusia) la simplu şi perechea Jung-Yan Chan (Taipei) / Martina Hingis (Elveţia).

Elena Vesnina este prezentă pe tablou la ediţia actuală – cap de serie 24 – Martina Hingis s-a retras şi Yung -Yan Chan, devenită între timp Latisha face echipă cu sora ei, Hao-Ching Chan, fiind favorite 2.
Latisha Chan începuse sezonul 2018 alături de Andrea Hlavackova Sestini, care la acest turneu va face pereche cu Monica Niculescu, o echipă cu şanse importante.
