Pentru că n-am făcut-o la timpul respectiv şi pentru a lămuri câteva confuzii care am văzut că persistă, câteva detalii despre turneul WTA Premier “Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic” care s-a disputat săptămâna trecută la San José:

Turneul este cel mai vechi în circuitul WTA şi de asemenea cel mai vechi din lume organizat exclusiv pentru competiţii feminine, prima ediţie disputându-se în 1971.

S-a disputat mereu în California, între 1971 şi 1977 la San Francisco, în 1978 nu s-a desfăşurat, între 1979-1996 la Oakland şi între 1997-2017 la Stanford, astfel că San José a fost pentru prima dată gazdă. Ultima ediţie disputată de la Stanford a fost câştigată anul trecut de Madison Keys.

Numele actual este “Silicon Valley Classic”, care este precedat de cel al noului sponsor, compania de investiţii din Abu Dhabi.

Turneul a fost de categoria Tier II până în 2008, şi după reorganizarea categoriilor din 2009, este Premier (categorie care a înglobat fostele Tier I şi Tier II).

Finalele tuturor ediţiilor ale turneului, cu Mihaela Buzărnescu deţinătoare a titlului, dar şi cu Irina Spîrlea şi Monica Niculescu, în ultimul act la dublu în 1996, respectiv 2009.
